All Depends: Vacuum formed retainers can be an option, depending on the retention philosophy of the treating orthodontist. Traditional retainers (known as hawley style retainers) tend to be more durable and last much longer, simply based on materials. When its time to have the braces removed, discuss these options with your orthodontist.

Dr's. preferences: As a general dentist I have seen all kinds of retainers provided. I have seen both upper and lower removal hawley type retainers, upper hawley with lower fixed retainer, both upper and lower vacuum formed retainers, upper and lower fixed bonded retainers, etc. It depends upon the philosophy of the orthodontist and the specifics of each case, with some patient preferences on occasion.

Depends: These retainers totally surround the teeth and do a great job of "retaining" the final orthodontic result. Some practitioners still prefer a different type (hawley) retainer. Both retainers (if worn properly) will retain your result.

Yes: A vacuum formed retainer may be an option but in some cases, it may not be the best option. It really depends on how severe the misalignment of the teeth were before orthodontic treatment. A severe malocclusion or misalignment of the teeth may require a different type of retainer.

Usually, yes.: The vacuum-formed retainer (assuming you are asking about a clear snap-over retainer) is typically available. Some offices use this almost exclusively as the standard retainer. Easiest way to find out is to call and ask.

Yes: Vacuum formed retainers work just as well as acrylic and metal retainers, but they are usually more comfortable and less viable. Most orthodontists will provide these type of retainers.

Yes, but...: Vacuum-formed retainer may or may not be the best option for you. Some "medicines" are better than others for your problem, some have untoward side effects. Talk retainer options over with your Orthodontic Specialist to make the decision that will be best for your individual circumstance.
