2 things: Could be a pterygium, a benign growth of the conjunctiva on the inside part of the eye. It is associated with ultraviolet-light exposure (sunlight). It can prevent consistent lubrication of the cornea &result in a "gritty" corneal abrasion. The other possibility is nodular episcleritis-a benign, self-limiting inflammatory disease of the top part of the eyeball. Red&slightly painful-go to doctor.

Conjunctival cyst: If this is the case it is not dangerous. You can observe and it may go away on its own. If not, or, you can see and ophthalmologist and they can drain it. It is usually a very simple procedure with no pain.
