Why can't you eat before a gastric emptying study?

See below.: In the emptying study we measure how long it takes food to exit the stomach. If the stomach or intestines were partially full it would alter the emptying time and invalidate the study.

Interfere: The goal the study is to assess the way your stomach empties. If you come to the test with food in your stomach it may interfere with the results.

Standard procedure: Gastric emtying studies are standardized procedures because some variations in the meals may affect the values of emtying and therefore difficult to compare to a normal data base. Therefore it is very important to have an empty stomach before the test, in order to be able to obtain valuable results. Please follow the procedure described by your nuclear medicine lab for best results.
