Yes: Irregular menses is very common in young women who are not taking hormonal contraceptives. Periods can vary quite a bit by duration & frequency. The important thing is to use protection (condoms) when engaging in sex to minimize risk for both sexually transmitted diseases & for pregnancy. Ideally, if hormonal birth control is tolerable, pills/patches/shots could serve as 2nd line against pregnancy.
