Is there a difference in plaque build-up and calcium build-up in arteries?

Yes and no: Plaque build up within arteries can be "soft" meaning that it is recent in orgin. This is the most unstable form of plaque in arteries and most likely to rupture and cause a problem. Plaque that has been present for a longer period of time becomes calcified and is more stable. There are often no symptoms associated with soft plaque. Calcified plaque in coronaries can lead to chest pain.
