Popliteus muscle: Probably spontaneous rupture of popliteus muscle in upper calf region, behind the knee. If we're gastrocnemius (calf) muscle rupture would be much subcutaneous blood. The muscle is small and when pain resolves no significant motor dysfunction. Surgery to repair not usually undertaken. You need to see an orthopedic surgeon to confirm.

Tendon rupture: Go see your family doc who can order ultrasound to determine if achilles tendon torn/ruptured or not. Or perhaps just calf strain. S/he can then refer you to orthopedic surgeon for appropriate intervention if necessary. Out of curiosity, have you taken an antibiotic such as Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Levaquin (levofloxacin) or similar in last 6mo-1yr? Quinolone family has been linked to tendon issues.
