Possible infection: Conjunctivitis or "pink eye" very commonly starts in one eye and then goes to the other. Sometimes "bloodshot eyes" can be a subconjunctival hemorrhage or "popped blood vessel" but this is rare to be in both eyes at once. If he starts to develop a discharge or other symptoms, he should be seen by an ophthalmologist to see if antibiotic drops are required.
