Common sense: Swelling is a natural response to tissue injury. Temporary swelling in a joint can be managed at home with nsaids, elevation and rest. If the injury does not improve, or if it seems to get worse, i would go to an urgent care center to get an evaluation. Swelling in locations away from joints should be evaluated more rapidly.
