See below: There are a number of tests we perform to determine the cause of a stroke. Carotid ultrasound evaluates atherosclerosis in the neck arteries, echocardiography evaluates whether a clot arose in the heart ct/mr angiography can evaluate the intracranial vasculature looking for narrowing or occlusion of flow. Sometimes in spite of these studies we do not find the cause. There are more invasive studies.
