Maybe: Enamel is one of the hardest substances in the human body. Enamel grinding against a much more pliable plastic material like an invisalign tray is unlikely to cause even minimal wear on the enamel.. It will, however, wreak havoc on the plastic tray! if you are wearing the plastic tray to protect against grinding, you should have a more sturdy 'occlusal guard' made of thicker, stronger plastic.

Possibly: Depending on the type and thickness of the material in a patient reporting severe grinding and clenching, this type of retainer may not provide enough protection and allow further thinning or loss of tooth enamel.

Essix Retainers: I routinely recommend essix retainers for patients that have a habit of grinding at night or clenching at night. The thin layer of plastic between your teeth can serve to gauge how bad you are grinding and to protect your enamel!

Not likely: If you're teeth are completely covered by plastic trays or retainers, then they are protected from the abrasive forces from grinding or bruxism while they are worn.

No: The retainers are intentionally made less abrasive than tooth structure. The result is the plastic will wear out before the tooth structure. Many people make this mistake it is more likely that your teeth are grinding with the opposing tooth when the retainers are not in place. Also you may be more aware of the shape and size of your teeth now that you have a retainer.

No: The aligner will protect your teeth. You may want to try biofeedback to break the habit though.

Grinding: Tooth enamel is stronger that a plastic retainer, so the retainer will swear out without the tooth being affected. Grinding tooth-to-tooth will, however, cause tooth enamel damage. Speak to the Dentist or Orthodontic specialist who treated you about your situation and available treatments.
