Thyroid : If your wife is diagnosed with a thyroid problem i would get this treated first and once regulated then proceed toward pregnancy. Hypothyroid is linked into many issues with pregnancy including infertility and lower iq in the child.

Adequate treatment: I agree with dr. Leonhardt that it is important to treat her thyroid problem adequately before becoming pregnant. Make sure thyroid antibodies and free T3 are checked. I advise making sure her free T3 is in the upper half of the normal range before pregnancy. This may require treatment with liothyronine or natural thyroid.
