"Safety" is unknown.: The routine use of gadolinium based contrast agents for MRI during pregnancy is not recommended as the effects on the fetus are unkown. As such, contrast should only be used in unusual situations in which it is considered an absolutely essential clinical indication. While MRI without contrast during pregnancy has no known harmful effects on the fetus, it should be avoided in the first trimester.
