A member asked:

How safe is the radiation in an upper gi series or swallow? is it safe to have this test multiple times over the years?

It depends...: Medical tests done with x-rays do expose you to radiation...So it is not a good idea to repeat them often unless it is critical . There are clearly laternatives to upper GI series which are free from radiation....Endoscopy is one alternative but it depends on why the doctor is doing barium studies in the firs tplace? It is not a great test most of the time or is redundant when endoscopy is done al.

You can calculate: the theoretical risk at xrayrisk.com with a simple interactive tool. For the most part, endoscopy has replaced the UGI series for evaluation of the esophagus and stomach.
