A member asked:

Is upper gi series and barium swallow the same? what does it check?

Not the same: Barium swallow evaluates what happens from ingestion to reaching the stomach. It can show coordination problems and reflux as well as structural issues. GI series follows the barium further down the GI tract and can document how fast, or slow things move and any abnormalities during transit.

No: Barium swallow looks primarily at the esophagus while upper GI looks at stomach and duodenum as well.
