Do upper gi series and ct scans have much more radiation than a simple x-ray?

Yes, but...: By "simple x-ray" i'm assuming you mean a single film. Both UGI series and ct scans are, on the other hand, multiple images. As such, many x-ray pictures require more radiation than a single one. Of course, its important to understand why various radiographs are ordered, & view the benefits of each study in context with the amount of x-ray exposure needed.

Yes: The radiation doses of ct and UGI are 2-10x more than a simple x ray. However, the benefit of the tests out weighs the risks by a huge magnitude. Radiation is usually not harmful until a substantially higher dose which is not typically reached by even multiple diagnostic tests. The dose of a ct is about equal to 3-7 years of background radiation.
