Signs and Symptomps: A normal joint should be able to open without pain. The pathway of opening should be straight without deviation or deflection to one side or both sides. There should be no noise during opening or closing and you should be able to open between 48 to 52mm. If any of these conditions are a problem you may have a TMJ problem. See your dentist and if needed, you can be referred for a second opinion.

Stress: Many people have occlusal (bite) issues that can remain assymptomatic for years. Under periods of high stress you may be clenching or grinding more than usual. That will inflame the muscles and cause pain. Explain your symptoms to your dentist and they should be able to formulate a treatment for you.
