Days to a week or so: You develop "rebound" congestion after using afrin for more than 2-3 days. You can stop using it in one nostril until it is no longer congested, then stop using it completely. There are prescription nasal sprays to reduce congestion, or if absolutely necessary, try 1/2% Neo-Synephrine drops/spray temporarily. You can try over the counter decongestants unless you have a medical reason to avoid.

Cold vs allergy: Don't use afrin (oxymetazoline) spray longer than 4 or 5 days, or you can become dependent on it. A dose doesn't last more than 12 hours. If your symptoms last longer than a usual cold, see your provider to see if you may need allergy medicine. Go early if new fever develops.
