Usually benign: A pituitary tumor may secrete hormones, and the symptoms will depend on which hormones. One that secretes prolactin will lower lh, with lower testosterone. Acth tumor will cause cushings syndrome. Caution: young people have larger pituitaries, which sometimes can be confused with a "tumor". If surgery is needed, it is usually straightforward. Usually not: Pituitary tumors are rarely immediately life threatening. One situation that can be very cataclysmic is pituitary apoplexy. This is where the normal pituitary gland is "wiped out" by hemorrahage or bleeding from the tumor that then leads to compression of the normal gland. Loss of cortisol function can be devastating. Excessive growth hormone or cortisol can be life threatening in the long run.
