By close contact: Several viruses can cause hand-foot-mouth disease, most often due to coxsackie virus. The infected person gets mouth sores and throat sores, plus spots on the palms and soles, and sometimes spots elsewhere. The spots don't break open (different from chicken pox or folliculitis, which do open). Mostly seen in kids, HFM disease can also infect teens and adults if they do not have immunity to it.

Hand Foot Mouth: A rash in the mouth, hands and feet -- all at one time -- is due to infection with the coxsackie virus. Go see your pediatrician or family doctor to make sure of the cause.

Yes: There are at least 3 strains of enterovirus that have been associated with that pattern eruption. Immunity will develop to individual strains, but if a new strain circulates it can infect that person.
