Can adults get hand foot and mouth if exposed?

Yes.: Although it usually affects little ones (younger than 5), adults can also get hand, foot, and mouth. The disease is caused by a group of viruses, and you are most contagious in the first 7 days. Even after the symptoms pass, you can still be contagious for weeks. Since the virus is transmitted by contact with nose/throat secretions, hand washing is key! the alcohol based gels work even better!

Yes: Adults can come down with hand-foot-mouth syndrome, usually 4-6 days after exposure, but many adults are immune to it having had it earlier in their lives.

Yes, if not immune: Hand foot mouth disease (hfm) is usually from viruses such as coxsackie virus. Children are the usual patients who get hfm disease, but their parents can also get infected. People should see their doctors to verify their illnesses, as other infections (such as strep throat) can cause sore throat & skin rashes. Coxsackie hfm infections in the U.S. Usually go away on their own without complications.
