Little risk: A seizure can be scary for everyone. About 3% of children between ages 6 months and 6 years will have a seizure associated with a fever. The recurrence rate is about 30%. However, as long as it is considered a simple seizure and is only associated with a fever, the risk of developing epilepsy is very small.

Occasionally: Most of the times febrile seizures are benign. Lately, there have been reports that epilepsy can occasional lydevelop in children that have had febrile seizures.

Has he had before: 5 years is late for onset offebrile seizures, also the number of seizures with one episode of illness is not the norm. I would be concerned with other causes of seizures and would consult either the er if he is still ill and a neurologist for further work up.

Difficult to say: A percentage of kids that have some classical febrile seizures will go on to develop epilepsy. There are also some infants who will have seizures during fever that will carry the febrile seizure label because their pattern has not distinguished itself from that of the more benign process. I worry that any kid with more than 3 events will not grow out of their process like most fs pts.
