Most are benign: Hemorrhoids or an anal fissure or irritation are perhaps the most common causes. Less frequent are bleeding from lesions in the colon. Bleeding from the stomach or small intestine can result in bright red blood in the rectum if the bleeding is very heavy, resulting in very rapid transit through the intestines. In your age group, more benign causes are usually the cause.
