A member asked:

What is the difference between hypercalcemia and hypercalcemia of malignancy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

One due to cancer: Hypercalcemia (elevated calcium level) can have many causes - most commonly parathyroid hormone excess. Hypercalcemia of malignancy is due to a cancer eating away at bone and releasing calcium into the bloodstream, or generating a hormone (pthrp) that does the same thing. Talk w/your doctor.
