X-ray first...: With any finger injury you should have an x-ray to make sure that you don't miss a fracture, that may heal incorrectly. Once an x-ray is completed you will know if you need to individually splint the finger with something rigid, or if buddy taping is acceptable. Even with some fractures buddy taping is a good option, but this doesn't work for optimal healing of every finger injury.
