Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen): Its important to identify the actual cause of the pain. Generally, Ibuprofen is an excellent over the counter pain killer for tooth pain, usually better than tylenol (acetaminophen). If you have a swelling of any kind you should seek professional attention as you may have an abscess which could be serious. Only take these drugs if it's safe for you. Warm salt water rinse will also help. Wish you all the best.

Get checked: The pain can be your gums or decay in the tooth. You really need to have it looked at. Putting some extra effort into cleaning it is not going to hurt anything and may help.
