A member asked:

Will a temp filling prevent me from getting invisalign?

Not if small: A small temporary filling will not prevent invisalign, but i would think a permanent filling would be more appropriate. Check with your dentist.

Depends: A temporary filling is just that. It will need to be replaced with a permanent filling soon. If the permanent filling will be small and the exact same size and shape as the temp filling, then you may be okay. Remember if the tooth shape changes during your invisalign treatment your aligners will no longer fit and you will occur additional fees to take new impressions for new aligners.

Potentially: It is best to have the final filling placed before taking impressions for invisalign. If the temporary is lost and a final restoration placed after the start of invisalign, the trays that were made may no longer fit; requiring additional procedures and costs. Get it fixed first.

Yes: You want to make sure that all your teeth are in good shape before using invisalign. Because the trays cover your teeth your own natural defenses, present in your saliva, to fight decay are blocked from getting to your teeth. A temporary filling does not seal as well as a definitive filling. My advice to have it replaced.

Best to finish dent: It is best to have your dental work done before the invisalign impression. If the temporary filling will be replaced by a composite filling and the temporary filling is shaped to an ideal restoration, then invisalign impressions can be done. The invisalign would then act as a template to make the composite filling later.

Possibly: It's best to have the final filling placed before starting invisalign.

It should: As the trays are custom made to the shape of your teeth, and as the permanent filling will be slightly different in shape than the temporary, the filling change may prevent trays from seating fully. Your mouth should be disease free before beginning Orthodontics. Know that research shows clear aligners to be about half as effective as braces. See a qualified Orthodontic Specialist.
