Can ecstasy use while pregnant cause my child to have a pfo?

Not really: Ecstacy use is not linked to any structural hear defects except in one report where there was an association between congenital heart defects and use of ecstacy, methamphetamine and alcohol. Ecstacy acts on brain function. In general, if you are contemplating pregnancy, suggest seeing an obstetrician, immediately and obtain guidance. Ideally, care of pregnancy should start prior to pregnancy.

All newborns have it: A patent foramen ovale (pfo) is present in all babies prior to birth and just after birth. This hole between the two upper chambers (right and left atrium) closes gradually over time, but in 1-in-7 people it never completely closes. If it is small, it is considered a normal finding. Rarely a PFO is larger than usual and needs to be closed with surgery or, more often, with a catheter procedure.
