Depends: Immediately after surgery i find patients who eat greasy or fatty food have a lot of abdominal pain and cramping with diarrhea and urgent trips to the bathroom. It takes a while for the body to get used to not having a large input of bile with each meal to help digest the fat. While almost everyone goes back to eating a normal diet. I recommend my patients avoid high fat foods for the first 4 wk.

Trial & Error: The gbs function is to store bile which is then used by the GI tract to absorb fat. If the bile's not there when needed, the undigested fat will cause diarrhea. Gallstones impair the storage function of the gb; therefore, most people do not miss the gb after its removed, and there are no dietary restrictions. However, if diarrhea develops, it's best to follow a low-fat diet.
