Reflux esophagitis: Heartburn is the sensation one feels when gastric acid refluxes back into the esophagus. Typical triggers include ingesting tomato and citrus products, caffeine, mints, or spicey foods. Additionally eating late at night and/or shortly before going to bed will often time predispose patients to increased heartburn symptoms.
