A member asked:

I've been on subutex 8 mg 3x daily for 7 years now and i have to have a vigorous surgery in my sinuses and to my gums yet the surgeon is only saying he will write oxycodone 7.5/500 for after surgery.

Percocet : The highest amount of oxycodone in Percocet formulations is 10mg. The 7.5 dose is usually sufficient for moderate to severe pain. Of course, the concern is the possibility of misuse/ abuse, so it is best to try to titrate the lowest effective dose possible for the shortest duration. The 500 mg of tylenol (acetaminophen) is also a pretty whopping dose of analgesic., even though higher amounts are possible.

That is appropriate : Persons taking subutex are generally recovering addicts. Your doctor is only trying to prevent you from becoming addicted again. When i see a patient that requests a certain medication or dosage it raises red flags about possible addiction. Hopefully, your dr. Consulted with the doctor that prescribes the subutex. At some point you are suppose to wean off of the subutex. 7 years is a long time.

So...: The pain meds your surgeon is willing to give you is quite adequate for almost every surgery that can be performed. That strength would knock me out. I don't prescribe that strength very often myself. Unless you are a drug addict with a long history of such abuse...You should be just fine. And thank the doctor for watching out for your health, by not overprescribing.
