With liver involved: It can be if liver involvement occurs. It causes hepatitis which can be fatal.

No: Mono is very common, but usually not severe. Teens and adults catch it (it's caused by the ebv virus) by contacting an infected person's saliva. Young children catch the virus too, such as from parents and relatives sharing food or drink with them. However, young kids have milder symptoms so doctors don't diagnose mono. Teens and adults have harsher symptoms, so are diagnosed as having mono.
