Tough circumstance: Any motion while doing surgery can be a disaster so he is trying to be safe for the eye. He cannot count on her to be still! her pcp may be able to help with all risks benefits and options as regards cardiac, pulmonary and life! she may have to live with the cataracts and blindness.

It can be done.: General anesthesia can be done safely on a 92 year-old. All of her medical conditions should be reviewed and optimized to minimize the risks. There are some reports of worsening confusion or dementia after general anesthesia, but the correlation and causes are not well-known. You must weigh the benefits and the risks carefully in a discussion with her doctors including an anesthesiologist.

Talk to MD: The surgeon usually is very insistent that a patient not move during the operation. As you can imagine it is very hard to work on a moving target. That being said your mother is at an increased risk from anesthesia due to her age. There may be a compromise position , which is why i recommend talking to your surgeon and anesthesiologist to minimize the risk to your mother.
