Depends: Generally you should have a colonoscopy at age 50, or 10 years before the age your mother was diagnosed with colon cancer-- whichever is earlier. Regardless of your age, if you are having any rectal bleeding you should have a colonoscopy.

No: Unless you have familial history of disorders that predispose to colon cancer, such as familial polyposis and other related disorders there is no reason to undergo colonoscopy at your age.

CRCS at age 45 yrs: The ACS recommends that people at average risk* of colorectal cancer start regular screening at age 45.People who are in good health and with a life expectancy of more than 10 years should continue regular CRCS through the age of 75. If my mother had colon cancer diagnosed at age 50, then it would be recommended that I start colonoscopies at age 40, and have one at least every 5 yrs.

Agree with Dr. F: Unless you mother had colon cancer at age 37, you can delay the colonoscopy to age 50 or 10 years before the age at which your mother was diagnosed. You can reduce your risk of colon cancer by increasing your intake of fiber.
