In can be: It depends on the reason for the backpain. A lot of back pain is due to the muscles and exercise to improve muscle tone may help in the settings where the muscle exercised in swimming help that pain. It can never be emphasized enough that back pain is more often a muscle problem than a pinched nerve or arthritis.

Less stress on Spine: with swimming, however hard to say if it will help. Likely the less stress will allow the disk to heal quicker. Depends also on what types of swimming strokes you are performing.
