Swimming avoids: axial loading of your vertebral columns and enhance/ maintain flexibility which means it is an excellent exercise. However you should avoid violent bending motions while in the water, which means you probably should not be doing butterfly strokes. Otherwise nice steady and gentle swimming strokes would be very nice for your spine health.

Recommend: Swimming is one of the best approaches to take pressure off back, but strengthen and stretch core muscles. Even can be used with full disc ruptures, but works very well in rehab setting, when disc has desiccated and become smaller.
