Swimming: Swimming is a very good activity for someone with back pain. The water helps to unweight the spine. I refer many of my patients for water therapy.

To start: Water (or aquatic-based therapy) is an excellent way to initiate a exercise/therapy program for disc herniation or degenerative discs. However therapy should progress in a steplike fashion with land therapy gradually incorporated to simulate real-life activity. But water is a great place to start therapy and keep cardiovascular conditioning up to par.
