Sed rate lpusy!: Get a crp, since many states will alter serum fibrinogen, the main determinant of an elevated esr. However, either or, if elevated does not diagnose artertitis. However, i would not by the diagnosis with seeing an elevated crp. But a biopsy is needed to confirm the clinical impression!

Big picture: The erythrocyte sedimentation rate / ESR / sed rate is the only lab that's usually abnormal (it'll be elevated) in temporal arteritis / polymyalgia rheumatica. Different physicians have different criteria that they want to see met before instituting treatment for temporal arteritis. The sed rate is helpful but is meaningful only in the context of the clinical picture.
