Rarely: Most often whitening can be done safely and comfortable without anesthesia. In extremely sensitive cases anesthesia can be used. Young patients and those with exposed roots or worn edges tend to have the most sensitivity. If your teeth are just too sensitive to whiten you can consider bonding or veneering.

Teeth Whitening: A whitening can often be occomplished without any kind of anesthesia, but sometimes patients are extremely sensitive to the proceedure. For these people i will usually give them a rx for a flouride toothpaste and have them brush 2-3 times a day for a couple of weeks prior to the whitening. This usually does the trick. Ask your dentist if they can do this for you.

No: Local anesthetic is not required to whiten your teeth. However, with power bleaching therapy, some patients may be tooth sensitive to tolerate whitening process, and may elect to be anesthetize during the bleaching process.
