A member asked:

What are spinal taps test for?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

CSF: Spinal taps are done to obtain cerebral spinal fluid. The fluid then can be analysed for abnormal blood cells, abnormal proteins, sugar, and antibodies. Taps or lp's are done when meningitis (bacterial or viral), abnormal bleeding in the brain, or multiple sclerosis are suspected. The fluid is cultured to find cause of infection. There are some new studies for factors in ms and dementia.
