Could Be Dry Mouth: Dehydration could be the cause since the hairlike projections on the top surface of our tongues (filiform papillae) can appear white in color for various reasons. When we get depressed or stressed, you may not be eating/drinking properly along with your immune system being compromised which could cause the tongue to appear white. Foods or a fungal infection ('thrush") could also cause stains.
