I'm wondering can the stress of past medical issues cause depression now?

Certainly: Being haunted by past stresses can cause sadness or other negative feelings in the present. Psychotherapy with someone you like and trust can help. Be well

Yes, in the midst of: a medical (or any life challenge) issue we do not have time 2 process the emotional issues that arise. When the crisis passes, our psyche still needs to process what has occurred. Depression is one possible reaction, other symptoms could occur as well. Some people could have a sudden surge of anger, nightmares, or panic attacks. The symptoms are our unconscious' way of getting our attention & help
