Usually: The eyelid is anesthtized ("numbed") before the incision and drainage of a chalazion (chronic stye). Some times for a hordeoulm (acute inflamed stye) it can just be incised with a needle a scalple if it is near draining spontaneously, and this will allow it to resolve without a more extensive surgery requiring anesthetic.
