May cause hip pain: A bursa is a fluid filled sac that helps cushion and decrease the friction between the muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, etc of the body's joints. Bursitis occurs when the bursa is inflammed. The trochanteric bursa is located on the outer side of the hip (see picture). It's named for it's position on the bone (greater trochanter of the femur).
