Consults: Have him see a good general dentist in your area for a consult. Discuss this issue with the dentist and see what he\she thinks about a consult with a good orthodontist in your area. Have them work together as a team, along with you and your son as to the best way to handle this issue. We can't give you any specific advice without actually seeing your son in person, along with current x-rays.

Orthodontics: Moving the teeth with orthodontic treatment would probably be the prefered way to treat a diastema problem in a 13 year old. Unless there is a tooth size abnormality `i would not reccomend space closure by restorative treatment.

Diastema: Your dentist can examine and diagnose better. He may need braces .Other options are full bonding or veneer which your dentist will decide.

Braces first : Orthodontics would be the first choice in closing gap(diastema) between front teeth. However, a band of tissue between the roots of teeth may prevent the closure and have to be surgically reduced. Start with the orthodontist. Gaps can be closed with bonding(adding white plastic filling to each tooth to widen teeth and close space. I think veneers and crowns are too radical for young teeth of 13yo.

Orthodontics: Bonding or veneers can certainly be used to close any space. But 5 mm may result in central incisors that look unusually wide. Braces may be a better solution if the muscle tissue between the teeth is not overly thickened. This area is called a frenum and may result in relapsed spacing after braces. A dental and orthodontic consultation will be necessary to formulate the best plan of attack.

Braces: There are many options that are faster, but that's a fairly large space to close by making the teeth larger. Ask your dentist about invisalign or traditional orthodontics.

Coordinated Rx: Space may be due to malpositioned teeth, narrower than normal upper teeth (especially the lateral incisors, the teeth nest to the middle ones), overly thick tissue between upper front teeth, extra diminutive tooth up in the gums between front teeth, or other reasons. Have your dentist coordinate rx with orthodontist and possibly periodontist. Solution is determined by the problem.
