This seems to be related to changing hormone levels before the period , especially an increase in progesterone compared to oestrogen, a decrease in serotonin level and a slight elevation in body temperature with decreased melatonin levels. Stress management , cutting back on salt and sugar , caffeine and alcohol all seem to help .Sometimes hormonal contraceptives and antidepressants are advised.
