Most don't help: Discharge is most likely a sign of infection, which will not respond well to otc medications. Pus-like discharge may be a bacterial infection, which can be highly contagious, and can be treated with antibiotic eye drops. Viral infections are very common, highly contagious, and are not treatable with antibiotics. Allergy can give a watery discharge with itching. Zaditor (ketotifen) and alaway otc might help.

Use warm compresses: There is no over the counter medicine that is useful. Try using warm compresses to the closed eye lids 3 x a day for a few minutes. If this persists, see your pediatrician. Discharge often accompanies a cold in children and usually clears on its own.
