Yes: Tattooing is one of several ways to create a new areola after breast reconstruction. Since tattooing only creates the color difference, there is no real nipple creation. This can be accomplished with a small surgical procedure to create a raised "nipple".

Very common: This is currently the most popular method of restoring pigmentation to a reconstructed nipple and areola following mastectomy or other breast reconstructive procedures. It is commonly performed by the plastic surgeon. It may fade with time, as with any other tattoo, and may need to be repeated.

Yes: It is quite common to use tattoo ink to color the reconstructed nipple. This can be done alone or together with creation of a raised nipple. Many times, the surgeon will do the tattooing but sometimes the tattoo will be performed at a later date by a cosmetic tattoo artist.

Nipple tattooing: Nipple areola tattooing is done to colorize the reconstructed nipple areola, so that it matches the opposite breast. In bilateral reconstruction, the patient can choose the color of her nipples and areolas. We also offer 3d tattooing, which remains flat but looks like the nipple is standing upright.
