Rest, ice, compress: Rest, ice packs and compression may all help to limit swelling. It is very important to follow your physician's recommendations.

Variable: Usually, for small hernias there is not much swelling. Bruising is common, but not painful and temporary. This can extend into the scrotum and penis as well. Ice packs can help, along with an athletic supporter.
