OTC pain meds: Work pretty well. Alternate Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen taking care not to exceed the newly revised daily maximum for either med. If it persists more than 2-3 days, schedule an exam and get it looked it, just to be sure.

OTC, see Dentist: Dr. Dewolf gave you a great answer to your question. The pain could be from an aphthous ulcer (canker sore), an abrasion, or something else. If you know what it was from, it should go away on its own. If not, or it persists more than two weeks, or if you are uncomfortable and can't wait that long, see your dentist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment if necessary.
