Does an anesthesiaologist put you under for an colonoscopy?

It depends: Some gastroenterologists work with anesthesiologists who sedate patients for colonoscopy. Some gastroenterologists do their own sedation for procedures. Ask your doctor how they practice.

Yes/No: There are two types of anesthesia providers in the usa, anesthesia doctors and anesthesia nurses or certified registered nurse anesthetist (crna). They are both qualified for the administration of anesthesia for colonoscopy. However, anesthesia for patients with medical conditions is best performed by anesthesia doctors.

Not necessary: Most healthy patients do not require the services of an anesthesiologist. The doctor doing the procedure can provide conscious sedation which is adequate in the vast majority of procedures.
